All Hallow's Eve

I love Halloween and don't care who knows it.

I remember when I was about 4 or 5 and we lived in Beaverton. It was Halloween but my folks didn't have enough money for a costume for me. My mom had a friend, I think her name was Fran or Ruth or something and she was a big lady (to me) and very gregarious. She was fun and she had older kids that I used to play with.

Well Fran had a devil costume that she let my mom borrow. So, bless her heart, my mom let me wear this cool little red devil costume. She even got me a pitchfork. It was fun. It had a little, red cape too - at least I think it did. I went all over the neighborhood that year. I went to my man's house (this elderly couple that I used to hang out at their house), Dawn Patrols (my friend who's step dad had Playboys all over the house) and my friend Tanya's house. I'm sure I got a lot of candy but I don't really remember, all I remember was the costume. It was fun.

I'm sure my mom got some grief from people who didn't think the devil was an appropriate costume for me to wear, but she never told me about it. I loved the pitchfork.

I've been all sorts of interesting things for Halloween. My favorite costume that Holly had was Woody Woodpecker. This is still when costumes came in a little square box and were all plastic. The mask made you sweat as it covered all breathing outlets. I was a hobo and wore my dad's clothes (not sure what that means about his clothes) and a witch one year.

Any other memorable Halloween costumes?

I was a bunny rabbit one year, and for the rest of the year I wore the outfit minus the ears to bed every night. I was also Raggedy Ann and I didn't even need a wig, just did my hair in ringlets. I think that was my favorite outfit! I had the apron and plumes. I know cute huh?

when i was in kindergarten my brother and i wore superman and supergirl costumes that were homemade by my mom. they were pretty crappy looking, but they served the purpose! there is a picture of me at the church party standing next to a boy with a nice, crisp store bought superman costume and i have sort of a sad look on my face.
we joke about this now, but i am proud that we had homemade costumes!

My friend Cheryl and I went to a Jr High party as a "Monster and His Trainer". So I dressed up as a monster with this great mask and Cheryl dressed as a man and was the trainer. It was really fun until we wanted to dance with boys, we didn't feel very cute.

I had a friend one year that dressed as Joni Ericson, she rented a wheelchair and got one of her cassette tapes and cut out Joni's picture and put her own in, she had a paintbrush in her mouth. So mean, but funny.

THe only costume I had that is worth mentioning ( usually it was a sheet with two holes ) is the year my sister made me a gypsy costume. It had a yellow skirt with pointy hem, and a purple blouse, and I wore a kerchief on my head. But the best thing was the tambourine I carried. I was the envy of everyone in the second grade and they lined up to play the tambourine at recess.

My best costume was a "witch doctor" I had a fuzzy white wig - black and white make up on my face and a little shrunk up head on a stick (not real). I wore a sheet ripped up and sandals - I think it was about the 5th grade - I loved it. I have never had a store purchased costume when I was little - mostly because the only things available were stupid hard plastic masks with a rubber band and a piece of clothing you wore over your own clothes and tied it in the back - very lame - I loved Halloween it was such a big deal and we would walk for blocks with our pillow cases - everyone seemed to be out and about and loved the houses that would fix them up to scare us kids...speaking of this one my favorite Halloween - after getting too old to do the T & T myself I fixed up the front of our house - I bought that record that had scary sounds and put the speakers in my bedroom window that were directly above our porch - I rigged up a ghost that I could lower and raise from my window and it would swoop down to scare people - put out hay and old crap to make our approach to the house very scary....I loved it - loved having the kids huddle together to approach our porch - my mom gave away good candy bars that year to make up for my mischief.
Did you ever go to a house to have someone on the porch dressed as a scarecrow or something and then they popped up alive - that was the best...It was all great fun - and I was never afraid of anything real - and got buckets of candy (loved the homemade popcorn balls and candy apples -until we were told they all had razor blades in them - and we took our bags of candy to the local hospital to be x-rayed - and have you heard this was an urban legend - no razor blades ever...oh my those popcorn balls that were tossed - because of fear...

The one costume that I remember was a flower. My mom made petals out of wire and tissue paper. And of course it rained as it does most Halloweens.... well you can imagine the mess.

I was talking with my sister the other day and she was telling me about the costume that her granddaugher requested this year. She wanted to be Scooby Doo dressed like a pumpkin. And the great Grandma that my sister is made it. I can't wait to see a picture of it.

About Me

I work at a Christian School district only 4 miles from my home. The people there are full of grace and love and I am glad to be a part of this ministry. I have a neice and nephew whom I love dearly. They are 12 and almost 15 respectively. I have two amazing sisters and two amazing brothers-in-law. Of course, I would not be here if it were not for my mother agreeing to marry my dad. Good going mom! My parents are my life and I would literally be NOTHING without their unconditional love, support and care. You rock mom and dad. Then there's Will & Lora...their giggles are like sunshine and their parents crack me up too.
